TrueBlue™ technology is a non-staining blue dye that is added to the Alaskan products so that you know where the product has been applied.
Many factors could affect ice melter performances, such as melting speed (or rate of melting), melting duration, components, shape of granules and melting temperature.
SPEED AND MELTING DURATION
Usually, ice melters on the market will feature one of these characteristics. Alaskan Ice Melters are one of the few ice melters that have both fast melting and extended melting properties.
It starts to melt as quickly as straight calcium, but lasts as long as other sodium/potash blends.
Alaskan products are proprietary blends of sodium chloride & calcium chloride, premium Mineral Melt & Pinnacle salt, plus a unique mix of urea & traction aid to provide better results.
While calcium chloride provides instant melting at an effective melting temperature of -31 °C (-24 °F), sodium chloride and urea provide extended melting and resistance to refreezing for hours.
This allows Alaskan to work longer, reducing the number of applications – an environmental benefit over rock salt.
An ice melter’s granule size is also to take into consideration when measuring effectiveness, as it will affect the melting process. Small granules melt too quickly while larger particles have a comparatively slower melting action.
Most effective ice melters like Alaskan use consistent, medium-sized and irregularly shaped granules which can bore through the surface and maximize brine formation. It also provides instant traction due to the increased surface area.
Alaskan formulations include calcium chloride flakes, which allow for a greater surface area when contacting ice and snow.
Products that are mined, such as rock salt, may contain a wide range of particle sizes with unpredictable and uneven melting characteristics.
The “Effective Melting Temperature”, which means the lowest temperature at which an ice melter will realistically melt ice, is different for each product.
Many ice melters on the market use a blend of ingredients, with rock salt as a major component.
These will be unlikely to melt much below -15 °C (5 °F). Alaskan ice melter, on the other hand, has a different formulation that has been independently tested, with a proven effective melting temperature of -31 °C (-24 °F).
