All ice melters are not equal

The specific ingredients, particle size and colouring will all contribute to the performance of an ice melter.
The most effective ice melters use consistent, medium-sized granules which can bore through the surface and maximize brine formation.
This breaks the ice-to-surface bond, allowing for easy removal of the remaining ice.
Products that are mined, such as rock salt, may contain a wide range of particle sizes with unpredictable and uneven melting characteristics. Alaskan formulations include calcium chloride flakes, which allow for a greater surface area when contacting ice and snow.
The most important ice melter characteristics are: effective melting temperature, melting speed and product safety.
